From the Chair

In reflecting on 2020 and UCSF Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, I cannot help but think of the adage “Adversity does not shape character – It reveals it.” 2020 saw plenty of adversity – a global pandemic fueling the urgent need for our scientific disciplines, while at the same time precipitating a drastic shift in the way we teach and work together. Add to the mix the personal disruptions, the institutional uncertainties, social and political unrest, and even a ransomware attack! The way we responded to the challenges of 2020 speaks to the tremendous dedication, commitment, and character of the faculty, staff, and learners in DEB. Research teams leaped into action, leading useful and innovative scholarship to help address the COVID-19 pandemic and actively engaging in helping others understand the crisis. We quickly re-engineered their research and educational programs to succeed in a virtual-only environment, and we found ways to continue to nurture the community that is so important to our collaborative work. We kept our department whole and even added new learners, new staff, and new faculty to our community. I am proud of this department and proudly share our 2020 accomplishments. Sincerely, Kirsten Bibbins-Domingo, MD, PhD Chair
